Voting Patterns

  1. Presidential Voting History Data Visualization (Visual Capitalist)

This visualization uses data from the U.S. National Archives and the MIT Election Data and Science Lab (sources included below) to show U.S. presidential voting history by state since 1976. The article was updated on January 19, 2021 to reflect 2020 election results. There are two visualizations available for each election year, a map and a graphic. Visual Capitalist is an online publishing website that uses public sources of data and communicates it using data visualizations and graphics.

2. MIT Election Data + Science Lab

The MEDSL collects, analyzes and shares data and findings in election science. The dataset includes returns for U.S. Senate, U.S. Presidential and U.S. House elections from 1976-2018. The dataset also includes county level presidential returns from 2000-2016 and various datasets specific to the 2018 and 2016 elections. Each data file provides raw data available for download.

3. National Archives Electoral College Results

The National Archives and Records Administration keeps records regarding Electoral College outcome, Electoral College votes by State, the candidates, and election notes (including third party candidates and faithless electors) from 1892 to 2020. The Office of the Federal Register will continue to update the results page. The data includes each State’s Certificate of Ascertainment and Certificate of Vote, which includes the results of state popular votes.
