Mapping Environmental Justice

Barnard College/Environmental Department-Sabin Center Project on Environmental Justice
First stage: Information will be located from all digital websites and organizations.
  • Upon conferring with Professor Michael Gerrard (Columbia Law School), seven Barnard College students enrolled in EESC BC3040 Environmental Law, have started to work under the guidance of course instructor, Dana Neacsu, PhD.
  • Since the beginning of the semester, students have met weekly for one-two hours on zoom. Thus, they could share strategies or have questions answered. Most researched and wrote for one-two hours. The formatting and posting took 20-30 additional minutes.
Second stage. Information will be indexed and published with a brief descriptive content per each category and subcategory.
Third stage: Publishing and maintaining the information up-to-date.

Project: Create an annotated bibliography of US resources concerning the intersection of climate change and environmental justice organized by 29 topics, and eventually grouped by zip code/geographic location.

Reason: There are numerous studies that talk about the geographic location or demographic incidence of various relevant factors, and making them all readily accessible in one place could be helpful to policymakers, advocates, and scholars, and would help avoid a lot of duplicated work. To organize them by their geographic location, we first need to locate all digital websites/organizations and index their published resources, offering a brief descriptive content per each category and subcategory.

Benefits of the Project: Once the above compilation is available, it will provide a basis for students to do all sorts of analyses about the vulnerability and opportunities created by climate change.
