Air Quality Levels

  1. AirNow Interactive Map

A geographical and interactive map of air quality levels in different cities in all states in the United States and certain regions in Canada. The map offers filters for different air monitors (Ozone and PM; Ozone; PM; PM2.5; PM10). Use this interactive map to learn the Air Quality Index (AQI) of air pollutants according to the closest air monitor in your region.

  1. AirData Air Quality Monitors app

This interactive map by the Environmental Protection Agency shows air monitor locations and monitor-specific information. It also allows users to query, download and create summaries of data. There is a multitude of map layers that cover air quality, including monitors for pollutants (CO, Pb, NO2, Ozone, PM10, PM2.5, and SO2), PM2.5 Chemical Speciation Network monitors, NATTS (National Air Toxics Trends Stations) NCORE (Multipollutant Monitoring Network), Federal Class I areas (national parks and wilderness areas) and others.

  1. Environmental Justice and Health Effects of Urban Air Pollution

In this study by the Journal of the National Medical Association, the researchers investigated the correlation between minority communities and air pollution emissions from the Hartford area. According to the study, there has been substantial evidence that “polluting facilities tend to be placed in minority and/or neighborhoods that race is a significant predictor of living with environmental risks.” Thus, this study aims to examine the relationship between population characteristics, environmental exposure, and health effects. The study concluded that air pollution problems strongly correlated with respiratory problems, which highlights health disparities in our society.
