Housing Stock Characteristics

  1. US Census

The US Census provides visualizations of housing stock information in the United States. Housing units fall under three types: houses, mobile homes, and other types of housing units. Data is available as a percent change annually or cumulatively and includes county specific data.

2. Current Population Survey/ Housing Vacancy Survey

The Housing Vacancies and Homeownership provides current information on rental and homeowner vacancy rates, and characteristics of units available for occupancy. The HVS also provides information on homeownership rates and the composition of the housing stock. Data is available for the United States, regions, states, and 75 largest metropolitan areas, available quarterly and annually.

3. American Community Survey

The American Community Survey is conducted every month, every year and is sent to a sample of approximately 3.5 million addresses in the US (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico). The survey provides information about the number of households, household size, and types of households. In addition to information like education and employment, the survey also inventories housing characteristics, financial characteristics, facilities, and housing costs. Data is available by nation, state, county, place and metropolitan/micropolitan statistical area.
