Poisonous Homes: The Fight for Environmental Justice in Federally Assisted Housing

This report from the Shriver Center on Poverty Law published in June, 2020 outlines specific case studies, current legislation, and the historical context of federally assisted housing within 0.25 miles of a hazardous waste site.* A total of 70% of Superfund sites are within one mile of federally assisted housing. The report also offers recommendations for residents, policymakers, and advocates. On the webpage, there is a webinar and map that further explain the issue.

* Please note that this only includes federally assisted housing that is near a Superfund site as determined by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). There may be other hazardous sites that have not yet been defined or have been cleaned up under other legislation.

Methodology: This website was found by googling “proximity to hazardous waste sites.” The first result was an article for earthjustice.org about a study by the Shiver Center on Poverty Law. Clicking on this link brought me to this Superfund site report.
